What is contrast conjunctions?

Contrast conjunctions are used to express differences or conflicts between two or more ideas or statements. These conjunctions are also called coordinating conjunctions of contrast, because they connect independent clauses of opposing or contrasting ideas.

Examples of contrast conjunctions include:

  1. but - used to indicate a contrast or exception to what has been previously mentioned.

e.g. I studied hard, but I still failed the test.

  1. yet - used to show an opposing idea or situation.

e.g. He is rich, yet he is unhappy.

  1. however - used to express a contrast or opposition to something that has been previously stated.

e.g. I thought it would be easy, however, it turned out to be a difficult task.

  1. although - used to introduce a subordinate clause that contrasts with the main clause.

e.g. Although it was raining, she went for a walk.

  1. whereas - used to compare two different things.

e.g. He said he liked apples, whereas I prefer bananas.

Using contrast conjunctions help to create a clear structure and flow of ideas in writing and speaking by indicating a difference, opposition, or conflict between ideas.
